FROM THE PASTOR
Later this month, our country will observe the anniversary of the tragic and deplorable decision of the US Supreme Court that sanctioned the destruction of human live through the legalization of abortion. We repudiate the contention of a misguided Court that holds that a woman's right to privacy over her body supersedes the right of the child in her womb. No violence is ever private; it always has public consequences. The teaching of the Catholic Church on the dignity of the human person and the sanctity of life reminds us of the fact that all life, from the moment of conception until natural death, is sacred because it is a gift from God. Only God can determine when life begins and when it should end. No court decision or majority vote can morally justify the taking of innocent life, especially the life of a child in the womb. Wherever life is threatened, it is the moral responsibility of the Catholic community to defend the right to life and work aggressively to insure that the human rights of all people are upheld. Living our Catholic faith means making our Catholic beliefs the anchor of our lives; living them all the time every day, both in our private homes and our public choices; living them in our families, friendships, work environments and social and political decisions. Anything less is lukewarm. Anything less ignores Christ's call to be leaven in the world and to "make disciples of all nations."
Although we consistently uphold the sanctity of life at conception, that does not allow us to ignore the issues that effect the quality of life from birth until death. How we treat the weak, the infirm, the elderly, the unborn child and the foreigner reflects our own humanity. We become what we do, for good or for evil. In an effort to enhance the quality of life of some of the poorest among us, St. Patrick's Parish in Lawrence has recently opened a Food Center called COR UNUM that is dedicated to welcoming all who are in need. The volunteers who staff this Center are dedicated to serving all who enter with the dignity, respect, and love that one reserves for the Lord Jesus Christ. They recognize that our Catholic faith demands that we treat all as we treat Christ.
Cor Unum needs volunteers to help serve food, bus tables, and clean up after meals. It is my hope that parishioners form St. Patrick's in Natick will generously respond and volunteer their time on a monthly basis. An information meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 24th at 8:00 PM in the Lower Church Hall for those interested in joining us who believe that no man, woman, or child should ever go hungry.

Prayer for Vocations
Dear God, you have created us in your own image and have given us so many gifts. We ask you to bless us all, so that we may know best how to love you and each other with those gifts. We pray especially for those young men and women who are searching for ways to serve you in love. May they be open to all that you may ask. We pray for those who study for the priesthood and religious life, that their preparations may bring to the church happy and holy priests and religious men and women. We ask this, through Christ the Good Shepherd.
Amen.
