FROM THE PASTOR

Next Saturday, January 27th, Cardinal O'Malley will celebrate the ORDINATION TO THE DIACONATE of seven men who will serve the Church in Boston, as Deacons. Hopefully, they will be ordained to the Priesthood in the spring of this year after they have completed their theological studies and seminary formation. The Ordination of these men will take place at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston and will begin at 10:00 AM. We congratulate these men and pray for their continued happiness as they humbly receive from the hands of the Archbishop what is one of the greatest gifts they will ever know.

As we approach this moment of grace for this local Church, it might be appropriate to reflect upon how a vocation happens. If God called men to the Priesthood by reaching down and tapping them on the shoulders, we would not be lacking priests. But the "call" to Priesthood is much more subtle and responding to that call requires a great deal of encouragement from a variety of persons and places. Vocations are rarely the results of visions, dramatic miracles or near death experiences. Instead, the call comes to most men like a whisper that grows quietly and gradually until it reaches a crescendo at Ordination. Like small seeds which receive the sunlight and necessary water in order to emerge as mature plants, a vocation to the Priesthood must be nurtured. Encouraging vocations to the Priesthood is an important part of every Catholic's vocation. Our challenge as a parish is to become the water and sunlight that helps vocations to grow. We need to support and encourage those sensing a call to the Priesthood, through our prayers, words, and by being true to our own vocations. If we help to prepare the way, there will be many more men willing to give themselves to the ministry of the priesthood within His Church.

I have had the privilege of being a Priest for close to twenty-eight years and I have thanked God every day for this sublime gift. I know that this is definitely a gift from God because no man is worthy of such an awesome life. Only a gracious God would offer this opportunity to enter into the lives of others and to be able to be "another Christ" to God's holy people. The challenges of daily life that the priest faces often mirror many of the challenges that face those whom he serves. We who are priests are constantly encouraged by the many companions that we meet along the way and we are relentlessly reminded of God's greatness as we see His presence reflected in those whom we serve. Let us pray that the Lord of the Harvest will raise up from our community more men who will generously respond to His call to serve as priests.
