FROM THE PASTOR

As we continue our Lenten journey, I want to encourage all of you to participate more fully in the Paschal mystery by attending daily Mass. In order to allow for more people to participate in the awesome Gift of the Eucharist, we will celebrate Mass at St. Patrick's each day at 8:00 AM, Monday through Saturday. We will also be celebrating Mass on Monday through Friday at 6:30 AM so that those who have to commute to work will be able to begin their day around the Altar. There is also an evening Mass on Wednesdays at 7:30 PM. It is my hope that as many of you as possible will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to deepen your love for God through your participation at daily Mass.

During the season of Lent, we will pray the STATIONS OF THE CROSS each Friday at 7:30 PM in the Church and will conclude this time of prayer with BENEDICTION OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT. I hope that all of you will plan to be with us as we contemplate the passion of Christ and grow in our appreciation of His sacrificial love.

I want to express my thanks to the young men and women who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation through our Parish Religious Education program. Many of these students traveled to St. Matthew's Church in Dorchester last Saturday to offer their assistance to that parish community by cleaning the church and the surrounding property. I know that Father Sheridan, the Pastor of St. Matthew's, is very grateful for this expression of solidarity and concern. At a time when many in our world are critical of our young people, it is refreshing to witness generous people sacrificing their time to engage in true Christian service. St. Patrick's is very proud of these young people and we look forward with great hope to providing more service opportunities, confident that the response will be as positive as it was last week. I also want to thank Fr. Mark Riley, Grace Kelemanick, Barbara Walsh, and Trisha Fair for their efforts in coordinating this project. May God bless you for your genuine compassion and your goodness to those who are in need.

I want to express my gratitude to the REV. ROBERT G. MC MILLAN, S.J. for his willingness to conduct a workshop for our new Pastoral Council on the role of the Parish Pastoral Council. Fr. McMillan is the Director of the Office of Strategic Planning for the Archdiocese and is keenly aware of the important role of the Pastoral Council in the life of the parish. I am most grateful to Fr. McMillan for helping all of us to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the importance of the Council so that we can discern together our goals to move forward as a parish family.

My brother priests and I are mindful of the pain that many of you are presently experiencing over the recent news concerning the Rev. Daniel Twomey. We want to assure you of our prayerful support and also extend our pledge of our assistance to you during these difficult days. If we can be of any help, please do not hesitate to call upon us. Let us continue to pray for all those involved and to ask for God's healing grace so that we can experience His peace.

DON'T FORGET YOUR RICE BOWL DONATIONS

Reflecting a Consistent Ethic of Life

Seamless Garment Reflection
"Love Has No Bounds"

"There is probably no more challenging passage in the New Testament than Matthew 5:38-48 -especially to American Catholics in our day.

In a society that is overwhelmingly favorable to capital punishment, the command of Jesus to reject retaliation - even retaliation in equal proportion (an eye for an eye) to the crime committed -calls for radical transformation of thinking about the death penalty. It serves as a summons to all followers of Christ to support nonviolent ways to deal with behavior that is unacceptable to society."

Michael Hovey, coordinator of Peace and Justice Education, Iona College, New Rochelle, NY

A FOUR NIGHT RETREAT
FOR THE PARISH OF SAINT PATRICK

The Church in Crisis - a Four Night Retreat Using the Gospel of Mark

will take place from Sunday, April 6 through Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 7:30 PM in the Upper Church

Why do we need a Parish Retreat for the Church in Crisis?

In the midst of the crisis generated by the scandal of sexual abuse of some clergy, communities have a great need to be joined together in prayer.

What will happen during this Four Night Retreat?

The community will come together to:
· listen to the Word of God proclaimed and preached,
· spend some time in personal prayer,
· receive some guidance to strengthen our faith.

Will we get the answers we are looking for?

While this Retreat will not offer answers to the questions that plague us, it will help us to focus on the presence of Christ promised to us when he said: "And remember, I will be with you always even until the end of the age." Matthew 28:20 NRSV. This promise is always realized in Prayer, Sacrament, and the Community of the Faithful gathered.

Please mark your calendars so that you can join us for this Parish Retreat
