FROM THE PASTOR

The SECOND COLLECTION that is being taken up at all of the Masses this weekend is for the CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES. The Gospel of Christ calls us to reach out to and care for each other. As Blessed Pope John XXIII wrote in his encyclical, Pacem in Terris, “man has the right to live. He has the right to bodily integrity and to the means necessary for the proper development of life, particularly food, clothing, shelter, medical care, rest, and finally, the necessary social services” (#11). Nearly half of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day. For us who are Catholics, this is not just a statistic but brothers and sisters who are in desperate need of our help. The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports those church agencies that provide emergency relief in times of crisis, support long-term development programs, offer assistance to immigrants and refugees, and advocate for a more just and peaceful world. Your generous contribution to this annual appeal helps to bring hope to suffering humanity. May God reward you for your compassionate response to this appeal.

I want to invite all parishioners to participate in our upcoming PARISH LENTEN MISSION that will be held on March 25-March 28th. This special moment of grace is being co-sponsored by the Evangelization and Spiritual Development Committees of our parish. The theme of this year’s mission is “THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP” and each night is designed around the critical questions that relate to our spiritual journey. The first night, we are delighted to present the St. Patrick’s Family Players from Watertown, who will perform the RESURRECTION CANTATA which will be an awesome introduction to the demands of discipleship as experienced through the eyes of St. Peter. The following three nights, the REVEREND VINCENT E. DAILY, a respected member of the faculty of St. John’s Seminary and Spiritual Director, will guide us through many challenges that are present in today’s disciple. Fr. Daily was recently awarded the Doctorate in Sacred Theology after having written his thesis on a modern day disciple, Dorothy Day. I hope you will all be present for this exciting spiritual experience as we prepare for the sacred days of Christ’ Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

Finally, I hope all will be able to participate in our LENTEN SUPPER on Friday evening, March 23rd at 6:30 PM in the school gym. This simple meal will remind us of our unity as a family and of our good fortune to be companions on this Lenten journey.

Stewardship

He said to him, “My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found." (Luke 15:31-32)

The stewardship message in the parable of the Prodigal Son is that it is never too late to become a good steward. Blessed is the elder brother who had been a good steward all along, but blessed, too, is the prodigal son who had to lose all he had in order to understand the value of what he’d been given.

Monthly Memorial Mass

Each month Saint Patrick Parish celebrates a special Memorial Mass in memory of those who died the previous month. We remember in a special way our loved ones whose funerals were celebrated in our parish as well as those who were buried in Saint Patrick Cemetery. The next Monthly Memorial Mass will be celebrated this Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome.
