FROM THE PASTOR

The Church in Boston rejoices this week as our new Archbishop begins his ministry as our Shepherd. The MOST REVEREND SEAN P. O'MALLEY, O.F.M., Cap, will be installed as the Archbishop of Boston on this Wednesday, July 30th during a special Mass of Installation at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. We offer our prayerful support for this gentle and holy man who now assumes this awesome position. The Church is blessed in our new Archbishop who brings an extensive background of apostolic service to his new ministry. Our new Archbishop has the ability to connect with people at a very human level and he has a profound love for all, especially the poor. A man of deep prayer, great warmth, and humility, Archbishop O'Malley comes among us to "repair the Church" and we offer him our prayerful cooperation as he undertakes this formidable challenge. We are indeed blessed to welcome one of the finest priests and bishops in the United States as our shepherd and we pledge to him our loyalty, our support, and our love.

It is with mixed emotions that I share with you the news that ELAINE MEZZANOTTE and MATT HANLEY have resigned from their staff positions here at St. Patrick's. I am very grateful to both of these wonderful people for their dedication and commitment to our parish. Matt has accepted a job offer in the private sector that will enable him to explore other interests while Elaine has decided to take some time off to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Both of these people have touched the lives of so many parishioners and we will always be in their debt. I know that I speak for the entire parish when I offer them our gratitude for their years of service and wish them Godspeed in their new endeavors.

I want to express my profound gratitude to NANCY MAGUIRE and to the large number of volunteers who helped make our parish Vacation Bible Camp such a huge success. Over 110 children spent the past week learning more about God through SCUBA ("Super Cool Underwater Bible Adventure") and the enthusiasm of all involved is contagious. The children, their parents, teachers, and those who helped Nancy all agree that this week was a blessed experience. Fr. Riley and I are very grateful to all for making this annual camp such a beautiful expression of faith and fun.

I have just received word that REV. STEPHEN G. DONOHOE and the Marines that he was stationed with in Iraq have made their way into Kuwait and are expected to spend a few days there before returning to the States. From Kuwait, he will spend some time at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina before heading to the home base in New York for a big celebration. Fr. Donohoe is deeply appreciative of your prayerful support and for the many e mails, letters, and card that you have sent to him. However, since he is now returning to the States, he has asked that we discontinue sending them because he will no longer be able to receive them. I would urge you to continue to pray for him and for all of our military personnel that they will be kept safe from harm.

REFLECTIONS ON PRAYER & FASTING

Fasting to me is very important. You have to fast for those who are hungry. It's not a question of just fasting during Lent or before the feasts of Sts. Peter and Paul, or on the vigil of great feasts. It's a question of atonement. You can't eat too much when so many people are hungry. I guess that's the reason for my fastings. You see, I take the Gospel at face value. Now those people were hungry and Jesus gave them to eat. I have the power to give them to eat. I can stir up other people who have money. It all goes together. So often in the evening I see the faces of a thousand hungry people.
