FROM THE PASTOR

I want to invite all parishioners to join us on this Monday evening, August 9th for our monthly EVENING OF PRAYER, which is part of our parish spiritual renewal program. This month we are delighted to have the REV. FABIAN SOGNON, S.M.A as our guest homilist. Fr. Fabian has been visiting with us here at St. Patrick's for the past two months on a mini-sabbatical. We have been so blessed to have this man of God in our parish family and we have prevailed upon him to share with us some reflections on the universal nature of the Church and our common call to mission. As you know, Fr. Fabian is a native of Togo in Africa and is currently serving as a parish priest in Nigeria. Fr. Fabian will be returning to Africa in the next few weeks and I am most grateful to him for his willingness to spend this time in order to heighten our awareness of the Church in Africa. The evening will begin with Evening Prayer at 7:30 PM in the Church and will be followed by refreshments in the hall. I hope that all who are able will join us for this special moment of grace in order to become more conscious of the universality of the Church and appreciate the diverse expressions of our common faith.

In these days of Reconfiguration within the Archdiocese of Boston, all of us should be mindful of the challenges that are present to those whose parishes are to be closed. The loss of a house of worship and the relocation of the faithful to other parishes can be problematic but it is also an occasion to strengthen our unity in faith in Jesus Christ. I want to offer the following prayer for all of us to pray during the days ahead in the hope that we may always be Church as Christ intended: one family with one faith in the one Lord, Jesus Christ:

" Lord God, through Baptism we are all members of the Body of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Yet we live out our relationship with Him in different parish communities. We thank You for all of the parishes that have served this area of the Archdiocese of Boston for so many years. We pray with sincere hearts that the new configuration of the parishes will serve Catholics in the Natick area now and in the years to come. With absolute trust in Your will, we ask that You prepare our hearts to accept these necessary changes. Help us to remember that although the number and arrangement of parishes will change, Your care and Your love for us in unchanging. Like Mary Your mother, may we recall the wondrous things that You have done for us and embrace our future with a generous spirit of trust, confident that You will provide for us as You have promised. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

THANK YOU

Thanks to Nancy Maguire, her dedicated staff of volunteers and all the children for their support in the "Lava, Lava Island" Vacation Bible School.

The students had a project to collect items for a health and beauty kit for St. Vincent de Paul to deliver to persons in need. Some children were so generous, they brought in their money from their piggy-banks.

What a wonderful lesson in caring for other people.

We appreciate their help very much.

Bible School draws interest
By Mary Kate Dubuss
Friday, July 30, 2004

The Montrose School was transformed into Lava Lava Land this past week for St. Patrick's annual vacation bible school. Director Nancy Maguire and her 46 volunteers were busy building volcanoes, blowing up plastic monkeys and flamingoes - making sure the camp had a tropical island feel for its 120 campers, long before the week-long camp began last Monday. Her husband Richard even constructed a 10-foot volcano out of chicken wire and PVC pipes. The volcano's lava took the form of red tinsel. Each camper added one piece of red tinsel to the volcano each day they did a good deed, known at St. Patrick's as their "daily challenge." Maguire and her volunteers hoped to illustrate to the campers that good deeds help love flow, as lava would. The camp, which runs through today, was a resounding success, Maguire said. In the three years she has organized the program, this was the first year she had to turn people away. "We hit our limit and turned away about 30 children," she said. "I hated doing it. I have never had to do that before. That just shows what a need for these programs there is in the community." Led by Maguire, the campers sing and do exercises each morning. Each day she promises "there is tons of fun waiting for you today," before the children divide into their crews. Throughout the morning, they learn biblical lessons, make crafts, enjoy snacks and play outdoors.

"The focus of the camp is self-esteem more than just keeping busy," Maguire said. The volunteers include mothers, Montrose School students and students from Babson College. "These are people looking for service opportunities, they are not all Catholic," Maguire said. Children come from various religions and churches.Maguire's favorite part of her job is "the inspirational stories I hear. A lot of parents regret that they don't spend time together, or pray. After vacation bible school, the kids are thinking and talking about religion," she said. "People are always looking for a support system." Volunteering here is "such a neat experience," said Cari Tatian. She has been involved with the camp for three years. "You get into the excitement, too. It gives you back energy," she said. Eileen Delvecchio has also worked alongside Maguire for three summers. "Hearing kids ask, 'When will it start again?'" is the best part, she said. "They enjoy it, look forward to it."
