TThere
will be a SPECIAL SECOND COLLECTION taken up
at all of the Masses this weekend to aid the victims of the EARTHQUAKE
IN PERU. As you know, there was a major earthquake just
outside of Lima on August 15th, and more than 400 people have
lost their lives. Another 1,500 people have been injured, some
of them as a result of churches collapsing as they gathered for
Mass. Pope Benedict XVI has called for “institutions and people
of good will to aid the victims out of charity and a spirit of
Christian solidarity.” As a result of this call, Cardinal O’Malley
has authorized a special collection to be taken up in all of the
parishes this weekend. Your compassionate and generous concern
for the people of Peru during this critical time will be greatly
appreciated by whatever assistance you can provide in this special
collection.
I
am delighted to welcome to the parish staff, MR. JOSEPH
VILLECCO, who will be an Assistant to the Director of
Religious Education. As you know, last year I asked Fr. Rafferty
to assume the duties of Vicar for Education and specifically requested
that he devote much of his time to improving our parish religious
education program. I am most grateful to Fr. Rafferty and to Lisa
Correia for their efforts to enhance the curriculum and their
positive changes to the overall program. However, it is apparent
to us that the catechists need a person on site to whom they can
go who will aid them in their understanding of our Catholic faith.
Fr. Rafferty, with his many other parochial duties, can’t be expected
to provide that level of involvement, and so he approached me
last year with the recommendation that we hire a part-time assistant.
I realize that our financial situation is somewhat challenging
at the moment, but I am committed to providing the best possible
religious education program for our young people. I realize that
the creation of this new position may appear to some as a luxury
that we can’t afford but, in all honesty, it is a necessary expense
if we truly wish to enhance our religious education program. Mr.
Villecco has obtained his Masters of Arts from Providence College
and is currently pursuing his doctoral studies at Weston College.
I am certain that Joseph will bring many blessings to the parish
family, and I am confident that you will make him feel at home
here at St. Patrick’s. By the way, we are in need of Catechists
to teach in this program, and I hope that all of you will prayerfully
consider becoming an active participant in the transmission of
our faith to the next generation of Catholics.

Stewardship
Hebrews
12: 12-13
Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,
and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may
not be put out of joint but rather be healed.
“If
I saw the gates of Hell open and I stood on the brink of the abyss,
I should not despair, I should not lose hope of mercy, because
I should trust in You, my God.”
-St. Gemma Galgani

May

Religious Education Registration
This is the second year in which registration was
commenced in the spring for the new academic year. However, several
families have not yet registered. If you are new to the parish
or missed registration last spring, please contact the Religious
Education Office at (508) 907-6220 or stpatreled@comcast.net
. As you can imagine, early registration facilitates organizing
classes.
A Call for Catechists
(Religious Education Teachers)
As we prepare for the beginning of a new school year we are
asking for catechists to teach in our Religious Education Program
at all grade levels. Please consider offering your time and talent
to this very important work. You may sign up on the board in the
vestibule of the Church or call the Religious Education Office.
Over the summer, after listening to the earnest insight of students
and catechists, we developed a new and thoroughly integrated curriculum.
Students will have a clear understanding of what will be covered
and how it relates to their faith lives. Teachers will be furnished
with the tools they need, including a detailed lesson plan for
each class. The new approach calls for discussion among the students
and smaller classes offer a better environment for more and better
participation. Towards the end of the Rite of Baptism, while the
parents or godparents hold a candle we pray, Receive the light
of Christ…May these children walk always as children of the light.
Please share the gift of faith so that others may live in the
light. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns. We'll
happily accommodate your preferences. Thanks for your prayerful
consideration of our request.

Prayer
for Seminarians
O Lord Jesus Christ, great High Priest,
I pray that You call many worthy souls to Your holy priesthood.
Enlighten the Bishop in the choice of candidates, the Spiritual
Director in molding them, and the professors in instructing them.
Lead the seminarians daily in Your unerring footsteps; so that
they may become priests who are models of purity, possessors of
wisdom and heroes of sacrifice; steeped in humility and aflame
with love for God and man; apostles of Your glory and sanctifiers
of souls. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us.
Safety for All
In an effort to make sure our building is a secure place for
all during the celebration of Mass, parents please accompany
your children when they need to use the rest room. In this
way we will all be assured that our oungsters are safe at all
times.
