FROM THE PASTOR
There will be a SPECIAL SECOND COLLECTION taken up at all of the Masses this weekend to aid the victims of Hurricane Charlie in Florida. As most of you know, a storm of great intensity created tremendous damage to large portions of the state and there is much work that needs to be done to aid people who have lost their homes and their jobs. Many of these people are in dire need of food and other material necessities. Archbishop Sean has authorized a special collection to be taken up this weekend for the victims of this devastating coastal storm. Because we are one family in faith, we need to offer assistance to our brothers and sisters who have been affected by this natural disaster. The proceeds from this Special Second Collection will be sent directly to the Catholic Charities USA who are already on site and have begun to assist the survivors. I am certain that you will be as generous as your means permit and I know that God will reward you for your compassionate concern for His people.
As we observe from a distance some of the challenges and difficulties that others face each day, we should be inclined to offer prayers of thanksgiving to the Lord for the blessings that we have in our lives. God has blessed us with an abundance of gifts and sustains us daily with His grace and periodically we need to be reminded of how fortunate we really are. Gratitude is a way of life for the disciple and as we contemplate God's goodness to us, we need to ask and answer the question: "How can I make a return to the Lord for His goodness to me?" One of the best ways is to deepen our union with the Lord through our participation in Mass, which is the Most Perfect Prayer of Thanksgiving ever spoken: the Prayer of Jesus Christ Himself. We are so fortunate to be able to celebrate Mass here at St. Patrick's every day at 8:00 AM and I would like to encourage all of you to try to make participation in daily Mass a part of your day's activities. The Eucharist is the sustenance that the Catholic needs in order to remain rooted in Christ and fortified to confront life's many challenges. I would urge all who are able to arrange their schedules in order to make Daily Mass a priority, thanking God for all that He has done.
In our parish there are a variety of ways in which to concretely express appreciation for God's goodness. One of the ways that is both helpful to others and personally enjoyable would be to offer your singing voice as a member of the St. Patrick's Choir. The Choir will be offering their voices to the Sunday 11:30 AM Mass beginning next week. Your presence in this ministry of service will enhance the celebration of Sunday Mass and will also help you to say thanks to the Lord for the voice that He has given to you. The Choir will be holding its first rehearsal on this Tuesday evening, September 7th at 7:00 PM in the Joseph Center and all are most welcome.
In the next few weeks, we will be highlighting various parts of parish life in order to give all of us a better sense of how we can become more actively involved. The Parish Pastoral Council will be hosting a STEWARDSHIP WEEKEND on the weekend of Sept.25-26 so that we can express our gratitude to God by offering our gifts to benefit His people.

STEWARDSHIP
Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift from God. Good stewards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably.
Weddings
Let us pray for those preparing for marriage.
Christian Hnat & Maureen Higgins: Sept. 18th wedding
Christopher Dougherty & Julie Sabat: Sept. 25th wedding
A Prayer for our National Elections
O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord, not only of individuals, but of nations and governments. We thank you for your law, which our Founding Fathers acknowledged and recognized as higher than any human law.
We pray that your people may be awakened to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing the world, but rather, a community of faith renewing the world. Awaken your people to a commitment to justice; to the sanctity of marriage and the family; to the dignity of each individual human life; and to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin, and not one moment later.
Lord, we rejoice today that we are citizens of your kingdom. May that make us all the more committed to being faithful citizens on earth. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Catholic Teaching on the Dignity of Work
The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God's act of creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers, owners, and others must be respected-the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages , to organize and choose to join a union, to economic initiative, and to ownership and private property. These rights must be exercised in ways that advance the common good.
