FROM THE PASTOR

There will be a SECOND COLLECTION taken up at all of the Masses this weekend for the CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA. Founded in 1887 by the Catholic Bishops in the United States and located in our nation's capital, Catholic University serves the needs of the Church in the United States through the research and teaching of the academic faculty. Catholic University's research has served us well in so many areas such as the problems with many inner city Catholic schools, the analysis and working of the Campaign for Human Development, and in its concerns for social justice and the poor. I hope that you will be generous in your support of this outstanding university.

I want to invite all who are able to join us for our MONTHLY EVENING OF PRAYER on this Monday evening, September 13th at 7:30 PM in the Church. The theme of the evening will be 'To Jesus through Mary" and our focus will be on prayer. We will have periods of quiet reflection and conclude with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. I hope that you will take time from your busy schedules in order to become rejuvenated through this moment of grace. The evening will conclude with some refreshments in the Church hall.

As I mentioned in my homily last weekend, I came across this interesting survey. Someone has calculated how a typical life span of 70 years is spent:

Sleep    23 years    32.9%
Work    16 years    22.8%
TV    8 years    11.4%
Eating    6 years    8.6%
Travel    6 years    8.6%
Leisure    4.6 years    6.5%
Illness    4 years    5.7%
Dressing    2 years    2.8 %
Religion    0.5 years    0.7%

TOTAL    70 years    100%

When put in these terms, we can see how little a priority spiritual matters can occupy in our lives. Discipleship is more demanding than we might at first think. Jesus is emphatic when He says that nothing can stand between us and His call. Discipleship costs us all that we have and if we decide to answer His call, no part of our life will be immune. None of us can escape the need to establish priorities, count the cost, and pay the price if we wish to be His followers.
