FROM THE PASTOR

As I write this column, the news media is full of reports regarding the proposed settlement for the victims of clergy sexual abuse. Obviously, this is just a first step in the healing process but it moves us closer to a resolution of the legal aspect of these cases. An equally significant portion of this process that clamors for our attention is the spiritual rejuvenation of the Church in the Archdiocese of Boston. These past months have challenged our faith in ways that we would never have previously imagined and now we need to focus on that spiritual center that has been obscured by these events. Today's FEAST OF THE TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS reminds us that even amidst the terrible pain and tragedies of this world, God is still with His people. Although we might not always understand the Lord's purposes, we nevertheless realize that, by the sacrificial death of His own Son on the Cross, God has redeemed the world and purchased us for Himself. As St. Paul so beautifully expressed in his Letter to the Romans, "If God is for us, who can be against us? What will separate us from His love? Neither pain or persecution, nakedness, danger, or the sword…not even death can separate us from the love of God made manifest through His Son, Jesus Christ." It is our fervent prayer that, having been painful participants in the passion of the last few years, we might now experience the overwhelming power of the Resurrection. Let us continue to pray for healing for all victims, for their families, for our priests, and for our Church. May we be ever more faithful to the Lord's call to holiness of life by our willingness to embrace whatever cross we might encounter. May we discover in our dying to self and through our shouldering of our cross the royal road to the Resurrection.

We extend a very special and warm welcome to the MOST REVEREND WALTER J. EDYVEAN, S.T.D. as he celebrates the 11:30 AM Sunday Mass. Bishop Edyvean is the new Regional Bishop of the Western Region of the Archdiocese and we are delighted that he has chosen to live at St. Patrick's Rectory. Although Bishop Edyvean will have no particular responsibilities within the parish, we are honored by his presence in our midst. Bishop Edyvean served as a member of the Congregation of Catholic Education in the Vatican for 11 years before returning to Boston in 2001 to be ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop of Boston. The priests of the Archdiocese as well as the universal Church hold Bishop Edyvean in the highest regard and we know that his presence at St. Patrick's will be a source of many blessings for all of us. AD MULTOS ANNOS.

I am also delighted to share with you the news that the REVEREND STEPHEN G. DONOHOE has successfully completed his term of service as a Reserve Chaplain to the U.S. Marine Corp in Iraq. Fr. Riley and the entire parish community, as well as I give thanks to Almighty God for keeping this holy priest safe from harm and we look forward to welcoming Fr. Donohoe back to his home at St. Patrick's within the next few days. As we prepare to welcome Fr. Donohoe, let us also be mindful all of the men and women who are in harm's way and pray that God's grace will move us closer to a lasting and just peace..
