Members of the PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL will be
speaking at all of the Masses this weekend to share with you the
current fiscal realities of our parish. I have asked the Finance
Council to highlight some areas of concern so that we might all
be aware of the challenges that faces the parish in this upcoming
year. I have also asked them to share some remedies that might
help us to meet these challenges in a way that would not adversely
impact our pastoral services. I am certain that you will agree
that we have much to be concerned about but I also am very hopeful
that we can collectively address this in a manner that is consistent
with our historical generosity.
In
our approach and our appeals for money, we can often overlook
the main purpose of our giving at Mass. We come up with all these
reasons why we should give. We try the business approach: we give
because we need 5% more money this year over last year. We try
flattery: you have the means; only you can give this amount. We
try guilt trips: “You are wealthier than 95% of the world’s population.
We try greed: you will get back more than you gave. We give every
reason except the right reason: We give because
Christ supremely gave. We give because we are not truly human
until we become a giver. We give to keep God’s grace alive within
us. We give because our gift reflects the nature of a God who
gives and gave Himself.
I
want to share with you two incidents that happened to me last
Sunday. Early in the morning, I went to Dunkin Donuts to get some
coffee for Fr. Rafferty and myself. As I went to pay for my purchase,
the man pointed to a parishioner and said that he had already
paid for it. I was humbled by this man’s thoughtfulness and also
by the realization that he undoubtedly was sacrificing something
else in order to be generous to me. Later that evening, I was
at the drive-through window at McDonald’s and a similar thing
happened. Having placed my order, when I arrived at the window
to pay, the girl at the counter pointed to the car ahead of me
and said; “It is already taken care of, Father.” I have no idea
who these people are but I was reminded of how spontaneously generous
and thoughtful the people of St. Patrick’s Parish truly are. It
is because of these two incidents, as well as so many more, that
I am confident that this financial situation can be reversed.
God already knows how generous all of you are and I would not
impose upon that generosity any further if it were not necessary
to do so. Thank you for the gift you are to me.

Stewardship
“Thus says the Lord the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in
Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortable on their
couches… ” Amos 6:1,4
Are
we the complacent in our own time, enjoying our luxuries while
others are in need? Stewardship calls us to consider how God wants
us to use our blessings before we spend all our time, talent and
treasure to indulge our own wants.
Rest in Peace
Let
us pray for those who have died, especially
Paul McMahon, Edward Richards, and Mary Gilleran
May
they and all of our faithful departed rest in peace.

Religious Education News
Please
keep our children and catechists in your prayers as they begin
a new year in St. Patrick’s Religious Education Program. Our High
School students had their first classes last Sunday evening and
Kindergarten through Grade 4 begins this Sunday morning. Our Middle
School classes start this Wednesday at 6:30pm.
Please
be sure your child is registered. Students who are not registered
cannot be placed in a class. If you complete the registration
materials this weekend, we will assign your child to a class and
he or she can begin next weekend.
Last
Sunday, a representative from Sadlier Publishing introduced us
to the new texts we’ll be using this year. Our catechists were
favorably impressed. Be sure to look at your children’s books
and reinforce the lessons they learn in class.
We
still have some classes without teachers. We’re working at resolving
openings; however, the start of some classes may be delayed until
we have a teacher. If you can find your way to help it would be
most appreciated.

Prayer
for Vocations
Thank
you, Lord, for all your great and wonderful gifts. Help us to
live each day with joy and humility. Keep us totally dedicated
to serving you. Teach us to recognize the many ways you make your
Spirit known. Then help each of us to accept your gift, then grace
to answer your call to form, strengthen and expand the Body of
Christ.
Amen.
Eucharistic
Adoration
Our parish is blessed with the opportunity
to worship before the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. Please consider Jesus’ invitation to join
him in prayer by spending some quiet time before the Blessed Sacrament.
No appointment necessary.
The Adoration Ministry is also in
need of adorers on a regular basis who can commit to spending
one hour a week before the Blessed Sacrament. The need is especially
great between the hours of 12:00 Midnight and 7:00 a.m., and daily
between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you can commit
to a regularly scheduled hour, please contact Anne Reilly at 508-655-8516.
One
of the requirements of offering Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
is that the Blessed Sacrament may never be left alone. We must
ensure that at least one person is always present before the Lord
in the Adoration Chapel in order to meet our commitments.
