FROM THE PASTOR
There will be a SPECIAL SECOND COLLECTION taken up at all of the Masses this weekend to aid the victims of the recent hurricanes in the Caribbean. As some of you know, three storms of great intensity have created tremendous damage to the islands of Granada, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Haiti that were already coping with the effects of weeks of heavy rain and flooding. Virtually every family in these areas that were hit by these storms is in need because dwellings have been swept away and clean water, food, and medical supplies are in short supply. Archbishop Sean has authorized a special collection to be taken up in all of the parishes of the Archdiocese this weekend for the victims of these devastating hurricanes. Because we are one family in faith, we need to offer assistance to our brothers and sisters who have been affected by these natural disasters. The proceeds from this Special Second Collection will be sent directly to the Catholic Relief Services who are already on site and have begun to assist the survivors. I am certain that you will be as generous as your means permit and I know that God will reward your for your compassionate concern for His people.
Today we are observing RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY and we are mindful of the need to pray for a conversion of heart so that all life, from the moment of conception until natural death, will be considered sacred because it is a gift from God. As we prepare for our national election this fall, all of us need to become familiar with the Church's moral and social teachings so that we might elect officials who will revere all human life at every stage of its development. We are enclosing a copy of the brochure, FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP, in order to assist you maintaining your focus on Catholic teachings as the foundation of your approach to a faithful fulfillment of your civic responsibilities.
I would like to express my thanks to the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and to the other parish ministries who sponsored last week's STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY. This was a tremendous effort designed to encourage a deeper awareness of the many activities that constitute parish life. We are delighted with the initial response and hope that all parishioners will become more actively involved in parish life. The parish family has been enriched by the time, talent, and treasure of so many individuals and we look forward to many new pastoral, educational, social, and spiritual activities as more people offer the unique gift of themselves to build up Christ's Body, the Church.
Finally, I want to urge all parishioners to set aside the evenings of October 17th through October 20th for our PARISH MISSION. The theme of the retreat is "One Lord, Many Faces" and is being co-sponsored by the Parish Seamless Garment and the Spiritual Development Commissions in an attempt to underscore our need for a consistent ethic of life in everything that we do. I hope that all will join us for these four evenings so that we might grow closer to the Lord and to one another during this special time of grace for our parish. Please feel free to bring some friends with you as well.
