Saintly Legacies
In the last two weeks the Church universal has celebrated the feast days of two saints whose ongoing legacies nourish our faith lives. Two weeks ago, on September 27 we celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. Born in France in 1581 this priest was a man of accomplishment who helped organize seminaries to improve priestly training, helped found the Daughters of Charity and dedicated himself to the service of the poor. In 1833 Blessed Frédéric Ozanam and his companions named their new organization dedicated to the service of the poor the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in honor of this great man. Since its first chapter was founded in the U.S. in St. Louis in 1845 the men and women of St. Vincent de Paul conferences have helped the poor within their local communities.
St. Patrick's St. Vincent de Paul Conference carries on this good work in our midst. With anonymity and a Christ like commitment to protecting the dignity of those in need, our St. Vincent de Paul members are there when a local person or family needs help with a fuel bill, groceries or rent. The contributions you make to the baskets at our Church doors fund this good work. Our St. Vincent de Paul members celebrated their patron with a special Mass on his feast day. Keep them and their work in your prayers and may God reward them for their goodness.
Last Wednesday, October 4 was the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most loved and accomplished of the saints. He did so much in his short life that it's difficult to briefly summarize him. Born to a wealthy merchant family, after initially attempting to seek glory as a soldier and knight he heard Christ's call in the person of a leper and renounced worldly goods. At the crumbling Church of San Damiano he heard the crucified Jesus say, "Francis, repair my church." He sought to do so with a small band of followers and couldn't believe that within ten years 5000 followers would embrace his radical vow of poverty!
There are two aspects of St. Francis' legacy to which I was drawn on his feast day this year. First, he unsuccessfully tried to preach the gospel to the Moslem world. He could easily have been killed in Syria but the sultan was impressed by his innate goodness and holiness and his life was spared. Secondly, one can't help but note that a member of the very order founded by St. Francis, Sean Cardinal O'Malley has been given a similar challenge, to repair the Church in Boston. Let us pray for St. Francis' intercession both for the cause of peace in the Middle East and for the renewal of the Church in Boston.

Stewardship
"The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man." (Genesis 2:20)
The creation story reminds us that from the very beginning of time God put the entire world into our care. We can care for God's world - and for one another - through our stewardship.

Youth Altar Servers
We will be offering training for any youths interested in serving as altar servers. Serving at the altar offers a unique opportunity for young men and women from the 4th Grade through High School to give valuable service to Jesus and his Church. Most men and women who were altar servers in their youth favorably recall how it enriched their faith and enhanced worship for them. If interested please call the Religious Education Office at 508 907-6220.
We are most grateful to our altar servers for the generous and faithful service they cheerfully offer. Pictures of our current servers are on display in the Church vestibule. The entire St. Patrick's parish community is genuinely proud of them and their parents and families should share our sentiment. May God generously bless them.
