FROM THE PASTOR

On behalf of Archbishop O'Malley, I want to urge all parishioners who have not already given to the ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL to do so now. The Annual Catholic Appeal provides the necessary resources for women, men, and children in this local Church to continue Christ's mission to serve one another. Your financial gift supports the efforts of those who work in the over 80 ministries, programs, and agencies that comprise the pastoral and spiritual works of the Church in Boston. There are so many people dependent upon your generosity as they attempt to reach out to others in need. The theme of this year's appeal, Together in Faith, reminds all of us to look upon the needs of all as our own as we strive to serve Christ in serving each other. There is an insert in this week's bulletin that explains the appeal in greater detail and I hope that you will prayerfully read this material so that you can make an informed decision about your gift. There are also Pledge Packets available at the doors of the Church to help you make a contribution. I pray that you will be as generous as your means allow so that we can continue to support the true mission of our beloved Church.

Monday, November 1st, is the FEAST OF ALL SAINTS and I want to urge all who are able to participate in the celebration of Mass. In addition to the 8:00 AM Mass on Monday morning, we will be celebrating an evening Mass at 7:30 PM. The evening Mass is being offered as a MASS FOR THE PRE-BORN DECEASED and we encourage all parents who have suffered the loss of a child to join us for this moment of healing grace. We are especially mindful of those who have suffered a loss of a child through miscarriage or abortion and we invite their parents and families to come and to pray with us. Aware of Christ's special love for children, we ask these "little saints" to intercede for us with God and to help us along our earthly pilgrimage.

Tuesday, November 2nd, is the FEAST OF ALL SOULS and we are celebrating our annual MASS OF REMEMBRANCE at 7:30 PM in the Church. We have invited the families of those who were buried from St. Patrick's Church during the past year to join us as we pray for those who have preceded us in death. Our prayerful presence is a source of great consolation for those who mourn the loss of a loved one and I hope all who are able will join us around the Altar as we commend our deceased to the tender mercy of God.

This weekend marks the official closing of St. James Parish on the Wellesley/Natick border. I realize how painful this day is for so many parishioners of that wonderful community and we offer to them our prayers and support. We are all indebted to the parishioners of St. James for so many acts of kindness and generosity over the years of its existence and we pray that God will continue to grant them His grace as they embark upon a new phase of their spiritual journey. Many of the St. James parishioners will now become part of our parish family and I want to extend our hands to them in welcome and friendship. We know that we will be greatly enriched by your active involvement and we eagerly await the opportunity to welcome you to your new home.

For funerals that were held here at Saint Patrick's, invitations have been sent to the family of the deceased. If you know of someone who experienced a loss this year who may not have received an invitation because of a funeral out of the parish, please contact the rectory so that we can make sure a personal invitation is sent to them.

Going Public With Our Faith

"Shout out, do not hold back!
Lift up your voice like a trumpet!"

Politics is often taken to be a dirty word. And many of us are remarkably timid about going public with our faith.

But political processes are simply the way that communities of people organize their common life, allocate their resources, and tackle their shared problems. Politics is about the values we honor, the dollars we allocate, and the process we follow so that we can live together with some measure of justice, order and peace.

How can people of faith possibly wash their hands of that public arena when our Scriptures so clearly show God's preoccupation with:
· Honest weights and measures in the marketplace;
· Judges who will not take bribes;
· The plight of the poor and perils of wealth;
· Hospitality for strangers and foreigners;
· Beating swords into plows and spears into pruning knives.
For people of faith, public policy is never merely politics, never merely economics. It is one way we try to plow the biblical vision of shalom into the soil of our history. It is a way of living out the commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is a way of being a "good Samaritan." Whatever your political party or beliefs, the gospel of Jesus Christ calls for your full participation in building a just and peaceful society this election year.
