FROM THE PASTOR

This past Tuesday, we were honored to host His Excellency, the Most Reverend Sean O'Malley, O.F.M.Cap, as he made an Episcopal visitation to St. Patrick's Parish. In the past, a visitation by the Archbishop of Boston was a very long and involved process. Archbishop Sean has changed this important event to reflect his uniquely simple and unfettered style of leadership. Archbishop Sean spent most of the day visiting with the priests and parish staff as part of his desire to familiarize himself with the various aspects of parochial life as lived in St. Patrick's. In the evening, the Archbishop had the opportunity to meet with the lay leadership of the parish family as he prayed and conversed with the members of the Parish Pastoral and Finance Councils. We were delighted to have this remarkable man of God with us and I was filled with a great sense of pride as I introduced the Archbishop to some of the wonderful people who make up this parish family. I know that Archbishop Sean was very impressed with the vitality of this parish and is very supportive of our desires to promote the Gospel. I am certain that all those who had the privilege of being with the Archbishop were left with the impression of a man deeply committed to Christ, dedicated in service of His Catholic Church, and more than qualified to shepherd this local Church of Boston.

I would like to express my thanks to the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and to the other parish ministries who sponsored last week's STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY. This was a tremendous effort designed to encourage a deeper awareness of the many activities that constitute parish life. We are delighted with the initial response and hope that all parishioners will become more actively involved in parish life. The parish family has been enriched by the time, talent, and treasure of so many individuals. We look forward to many new pastoral, educational, social, and spiritual activities as more people step forward to offer their unique gift of themselves to build up Christ's Body, the Church.

Next weekend, we will be participating in the Petition Drive with regard to the definition of Marriage in the Commonwealth. Social science, the wisdom of our religious traditions, and the simple common sense of our lived experience all point in one direction: marriage is the union of one man and one woman for the sake of raising children in a stable family and it is vital for the well being of society. Marriage nurtures life and advances the dignity of the human person. Marriage is a divine gift and no one has the right to change its definition. Please join us as we reaffirm our conviction that marriage is a union between one man and one woman.
