FROM THE PASTOR

Last week's snowy weather understandably prevented many people from attending Mass on Sunday and as a result, the Offertory collection was significantly lower than usual. I hope that you will try to compensate for this shortfall by making a larger contribution in this week's Offertory. We rely upon the weekly Offertory to meet the parish's operating expenses which continue despite the blizzard and we presently face an obvious deficit. Your generosity will enable us to continue to meet our financial obligations in a timely manner. The SECOND COLLECTION this week is for the Church in Latin America which was scheduled for last week. If you were unable to contribute to the collection, it would be most appreciated if you would make a contribution now. I am most grateful for your constant support and I want to assure you of my prayers that God will reward you for your many acts of kindness.

This Thursday, February 3rd, is the Feast of St. Blaise and it is a tradition to bless throats on that day. Because the Feast falls during the week, many people would not be able to participate in this sacred action. We will therefore have the BLESSING OF THROATS after all of the Masses on this weekend. We pray that, through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, God will protect all of us all ailments of the throat and from every other evil.

One of our young people is planning to attend WORLD YOUTH DAY this summer and is looking for some financial assistance in order to help defray the cost of this trip. World Youth Day is held every other year and it is a celebration in which the Holy Father joins with youth from all over the world to deepen their commitment to Christ and His Church. This year's celebration is to be held in Cologne, Germany and Ashley Crosby is planning to attend. Ashley is collaborating with youth from the area in order to sponsor a raffle so that they might be present at World Youth Day in August. Since the young adult is responsible for funding their trip, these young people are sponsoring a RAFFLE. Tickets are available after all of the Masses this weekend and your support of this endeavor will be of great benefit to both Ashley and the entire parish community.

Finally, with the Lenten season quickly approaching, I want to direct your attention to a special project to benefit the poor. Members of our parish community have been very supportive of Labels are for Jars, a creative effort to help feed the poor through Saint Patrick's Parish in Lawrence. Cor Unum has just released an excellent Lenten Guide which provides a spiritual reflection and questions for each day of Lent. This also offers opportunities for directly helping to feed our hungry brothers and sisters in Lawrence, which, as you know, is one of the most impoverished communities in the Commonwealth. If you are interested in considering the Label's Guide for your personal use during Lent, you may pick up a copy at the exits of church. You may also download a copy from the "Lent Guide" link at the bottom of the homepage of www.labelsareforjars.org. This would be a wonderful way to sacrifice for the poor during this holy season and I hope that many of you will participate in this worthwhile project.
