FROM THE PASTOR
As we enter the SECOND WEEK OF LENT, I want to encourage all of you to participate in the various Lenten activities at St. Patrick's but especially Daily Mass. The celebration of Mass is the Source and the Summit of all that we do as the people of God. As our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II stated in his encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, "The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. This truth does not simply express a daily experience of faith, but recapitulates the heart of the mystery of the Church". It is through this sacred action that we are transported to that moment when Jesus Christ offered Himself for the salvation of humankind. Our presence at Mass permits us, through the prayer of the priest who acts in the person of Christ, to unite ourselves to this most perfect gift of God's own Son as the victim for our sins. The Pope goes on to state that: "When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, the memorial of her Lord's death and resurrection, this central event of salvation becomes really present and "the work of our redemption is carried out." This sacrifice is so decisive for the salvation of the human race that Jesus Christ offered it and returned to the Father only after he had left us a means of sharing in it as if we had been present there. Each member of the faithful can thus take part in it and inexhaustibly gain its fruits." Mass is celebrated during Lent on Monday through Saturdays at 8:00 AM as well as Monday through Fridays at 6:30 AM. There is also an opportunity to pray the Stations of the Cross every Wednesday evening at 6:45 PM followed by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at 7:30 PM. I have been encouraged by the large number of people attending Mass during the week and I hope that this practice will continue to be a part of your daily spiritual exercises.
This Tuesday, February 22nd is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter and it helps us to celebrate our special connection to the universal shepherd of the Church, Pope John Paul. The Holy Father has been entrusted with the care of the entire Church and he is endowed with a special charisma to teach, govern, and to sanctify all of the faithful. As the successor to the Apostle Peter, he is the visible center and foundation of our unity in faith and love. It is through our unbreakable union with him as well as our local bishop that we are guaranteed that the sacraments that we celebrate are valid and real. On this special day, we offer our prayers for the Pope that by his words and example he may govern with fidelity those entrusted to his care and that God may continue to grant him the health, wisdom, and courage to fulfill his ministry of service to Christ's flock.
