FROM THE PASTOR

This Thursday, May 25th is the FEAST OF THE ASCENSION and it is a Holy Day of Obligation. All Catholics are obliged to participate in the celebration of Mass as we commemorate the Lord's entrance to Heaven. The Masses at St. Patrick's will be celebrated on Wednesday evening, May 24th at 7:30 PM and on Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 and 8:00 AM and 4:00 and 7:30 PM.

This Sunday, May 21st, we observe the 1ST ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION TO THE SACRED PRIESTHOOD for the REVEREND THOMAS S. RAFFERTY. I recall with great joy and gratitude that day last year when our then Archbishop and now Cardinal Sean imposed hands on Fr. Rafferty's head and he became a priest forever, "according to the order of Melchizedek." I knew in advance that Fr. Rafferty would be assigned to St. Patrick's so I was particularly aware of this newly ordained as he offered his life in service to the Church as a priest. The enthusiasm and joy on Father Rafferty's part was so obvious to everyone in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross that day and it has not waned in the past year. Father Rafferty has brought so much of that enthusiasm to St. Patrick's and it has been a joy for me to be able to share the pastoral ministry with him. His remarkable faith, along with his intellect and good humor, has been a source of great comfort and encouragement to many of us, especially to those who are ill. Father Rafferty's fraternal concern for both Bishop Edyvean and me and his selfless generosity give vivid expression to that saying of Sacred Scripture: "how good it is for brothers to dwell in unity." On this weekend, I invite all parishioners to raise a prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord of the Harvest for having selected Father Rafferty for this privilege of being a priest and we thank Father Rafferty of his gracious response. May the Lord, Who began this great work in Father Rafferty, bring it to completion. And may Father Rafferty experience in his life that same joy and happiness that he has brought into our lives. AD MULTOS ANNOS.

I want to invite all parishioners to join us on next Sunday, May 28th at 3:00 PM as the REVEREND WILLIAM N. VENTURA celebrates his first MASS OF THANKSGIVING. Fr. Ventura will be ordained to the Priesthood on Saturday, May 27th at 9:00 AM at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. Cardinal O'Malley will ordain Fr. Ventura and four other deacons to serve as priests within the Archdiocese of Boston. Fr. Ventura's ordination is an occasion of great joy for this parish because of his long association with this parish family. We hope that all will participate in this awesome and blessed moment for our parish and we congratulate our newly ordained brother.

Stewardship

"It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain." (John 15:16)

God has chosen each one of us and He has a mission for us. He has given us different gifts and talents so that we may complete the work He has appointed for us. Are you using your gifts to go forth and bear fruit that will remain forever? Or are you using your gifts for things that have no eternal value?

Please join us on Monday, June 12th, at 7:30 PM for our monthly Evening of Prayer where we will pray together the LIVING ROSARY. A "Living Rosary" is formed inside the Church, with each bead of the Rosary represented by a parishioner holding a candle. Please call the Rectory to sign up if you are able to participate in this memorable prayerful experience. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this special Evening of Prayer.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration

This week May 27-28 people will be invited to sign up to become Perpetual Eucharistic Adorers. St. Patrick Parish is very blessed to have 24-hour Eucharistic Adoration ongoing for over 10 years. Adorers who have signed on for this beautiful commitment stress what a joy, blessing and privilege it is to have this one-hour a week with Jesus.

"Could you not sit one hour with me?" "Do not be afraid."

Call Anne Reilly 508-655-8516 if you have questions or wish to do an hour.

All volunteers (ages 18 and older) are asked to complete a 2006 CORI form and return it to the Parish Office by May 26th, 2006. Your cooperation is most appreciated.

Prayer for Vocations

O Mother, awaken among the young generation a willingness to serve God alone. Implore for us numerous vocations for the priesthood and the religious life. O Mother, confirm the faith of all our lay brothers and sisters that in every area of social, professional, cultural and political life that they may work according to the truth and the law which your Son has proclaimed to humanity in order to lead all to eternal salvation and, at the same time to make life on earth more human, and more worth of man. Amen. Pope John Paul II

Nursing Home Ministry

Thank you to all who visited the residents of Riverbend on April 26 and May 10. A great time was had by all!

We need someone to lead the rosary at Riverbend once a month on a weekday morning or afternoon. If you would like to do this, please contact Jane Teepe at 508-653-2098 or jteep@rcn.com. If we have a few people, we will assign each person just a few months a year.
