FROM THE PASTOR

Every year, the Propagation of the Faith assigns to each parish in the Archdiocese a religious congregation and invites them to make a presentation to the parish regarding their missionary work. On next weekend, August 12 and 13, we will be delighted to welcome a member of the Medical Missionaries of Mary who will speak on behalf of their missionary work. There will be a second collection taken up at all of the Masses to assist them in their ministry.

The Medical Missionaries of Mary work in 9 countries in Africa as well as Brazil, Honduras and Mexico. The Sisters are nurses, doctors, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, therapists, craft workers, business people (bookkeepers, secretaries, etc.) and social workers. The Sisters work for Christ by healing the sick, with special attention to mothers at the time of childbirth and with newborn children. They also care for many leprosy patients, famine victims, refugees, AIDS patients and those with any other sickness that comes their way. They also spend much time teaching nutrition, better hygiene and sanitary conditions so that sickness can be avoided.

They have large training hospitals in some countries in which they work; teaching nursing, midwifery etc. Many of these young women who have been trained in these hospitals join the Sisters as Medical Missionaries of Mary; others work in these hospitals caring for their own people.

Because so much suffering can be prevented if the causes are wiped out, the Sisters seek out these causes and teach the people how to stop the disease. They do this by instruction of how to keep the environment healthy by providing clean water, latrines and other causes.

The Sisters operate many out station clinics reaching out to the people who find it too far to come to the hospitals. Local people are trained to operate these clinics. The Sisters are coming to ask your help in this work by your prayers for the people we serve, praying for and encouraging vocations and for your generosity and support of this work.

Stewardship

"The court was convened and the books were open…The one like a Son of Man received dominion, glory and kingship; all peoples, nations and languages serve him." (Daniel 7:10, 13-14)

We juggle many demands for our time and our treasure. Yet, on Judgment Day, when court is convened and the book is opened, which of those demands will be on God's list of priorities? Ultimately, we will be judged on how well we served Our Lord. As you spend your time and money, try asking yourself if your choices serve God. It may help you look at your priorities in a new way.

Rest in Peace

Let us pray for those who have died, especially
William J. Anderson and Francis Killeen
May they and all the faithful departed rest in peace.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

We hope all Religious Education students, families, catechists and volunteers are enjoying the summer. Our Religious Education Program will resume in the fall. We'll conduct a Catechist Training Session on Sunday, September 17 and classes will commence the following Sunday, September 24. Mailings appropriate to students' age and grade contain various scheduling information.

During these lazy days of summer I respectfully ask you to consider offering some assistance to our parish's effort to share the faith. Dedicated catechists, aides, hall monitors and other volunteers are what make the program work. If you have any questions about what is involved or would like to talk to someone who has been involved in the program please give me a call or Lisa Correia in the Religious Ed office at 508-907-6220.

Thanks for your prayerful consideration of this request,

Father Rafferty
