FROM THE PASTOR

I was captivated last week by the scenes on television of so many young people from every continent who traveled to Germany to be part of WORLD YOUTH DAY. His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI took up the legacy of World Youth Day from our late Holy Father Pope John Paul whose inspired idea it was to initiate these awesome moments. Young people gathered in faith around the Successor of Peter and demonstrated to the whole world a young Church, "one that seeks with imagination and courage to shape the face of a more just and generous humanity." The Holy Father concluded his visit to Germany with the hope that this event would remain impressed upon all of the youth and that it would be an incentive for a renewed and apostolic outreach. The Holy Father expressed the importance of the Church "as the place where God's merciful love reaches out to all people. In the Church and through the Church, you will meet Christ who is waiting for you." The Pope underlined the essential character of the encounter with Christ when he said that "Christ takes from you nothing that is beautiful and great, but brings to perfection for the glory of God, the happiness of men and women; and the salvation of the world." I was deeply moved by his inspiring words: "Let yourselves be surprised by Christ!" In his talk to the pastors and Bishops of Germany, the Holy Father stated that "we must proclaim Christ fearlessly and invite everyone not to be afraid to open their hearts to Him, for we remain convinced that in Christ is found the fullness of life and happiness."

"This means being a Church open to the future, and therefore one full of promises for coming generations, " said the Pope. "Young people, in fact, are not looking for a Church that panders to youth but one which is truly young in spirit; a Church completely open to Christ, the new Man…Young people are asking us to be consistent, united, and courageous…the Church must train our young in patience, discernment, in healthy realism. Yet there can be no false compromise, no watering down of the Gospel."

The enthusiastic response on the part of the 1,000,000 young people indicated their openness to and their acceptance of the Holy Father's teachings. At the concluding Mass, the Holy Father spoke of the importance of Sunday Mass and reminded the young and all of us as well that "free time is empty if God is not present….participation in Sunday Mass is what gives a proper focus to your free time. Do not be deterred from taking part in Sunday Mass and help others discover it too. This is because the Eucharist releases the joy that we need so much, and we must learn to grasp it ever more deeply, we must learn to love it…Let us discover the intimate riches of the Church's liturgy and its true greatness: it is Not we who are celebrating ourselves but it is the living God Himself who is preparing a banquet for us. Through your love for the Eucharist, you will also discover the sacrament of Reconciliation, in which the merciful goodness of God always allows us to make a fresh start in our lives."

"Let us go forward with Christ and let us live as true worshippers of Christ."

STEWARDSHIP

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me." Matthew16:24

Stewardship teaches us that all good things come from our loving God. Yet, if we are to be a true steward we must deny ourselves some of the many material goods of the marketplace so that we may follow Jesus and share our blessings with those in need.
