FROM THE PASTOR

The SECOND COLLECTION that is being taken up at all of the Masses this weekend is for the CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA. Since 1903, the Catholic bishops of the United States have supported the unique mission of Catholic University in Washington, D.C. as the national university of the Catholic Church. The proceeds of the collection have enabled Catholic University to be the place where future leaders of the Church are educated. Your generosity in this collection will allow Catholic University to continue its service to the Church in our country by forming its students in the spirit of faith and to educate them in the richness of our Catholic intellectual heritage. I am grateful to all of you for your financial support of this worthwhile educational initiative.

I am most grateful to all of you who so generously responded to last week's special collection to aid the victims of HURRICANE KATRINA. Your genuine compassion has allowed us to forward $ 15,000.00 to Catholic Charities USA which is presently coordinating relief efforts to aid the victims of this disaster. In the weeks and months ahead, we will continue to update you as to how you may assist in providing support for the many people who have been left homeless or destitute. At the moment, the overwhelming need is a financial one so that the relief workers can purchase the various provisions such as food and medicine. If you would like to donate to the relief effort underway in New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf, please feel free to put your offering in an envelope addressed to Catholic Charities and put it in the collection. We will make certain that it is forwarded to the appropriate agency. Once again, I want to thank you and to urge you to continue to pray for all of those who are engaged in this effort. May God grant all of us the grace to come together in a spirit of cooperation so that the victims of this tragedy will be able to try to rebuild their shattered lives.

This Monday evening, September 12th, we will have our MONTHLY EVENING OF PRAYER as part of our parish's on-going spiritual renewal program. We will be having a special HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD beginning in the Church at 7:30 PM. We are blessed to have four men from our parish who are preparing for the Priesthood and I know that it is through the awesome power of our prayer that they have been able to hear God's call and to attempt to respond. The need for faithful and faith-filled priests is great and I am convinced that there is no shortage of vocations to this wonderful life. God is still calling men to be priests but because of the many distractions in our world, it is hard for men to hear His wonderful invitation. I hope that all of you will join us on Monday evening as we implore the Lord of the Harvest to raise up men from this community who will generously serve His people as priests. We will conclude the Holy Hour with BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. There will be refreshments served in the downstairs hall at the end of the Prayer Service.

Finally, we wish to extend our prayerful congratulations to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Walter J. Edyvean as he observes the fourth anniversary of his Episcopal ordination on September 14th. AD MULTOS ANNOS
